About Me

Describing her work as organic and elemental, Katherine Boland dropped out of art school in the mid-1970s to become, what she describes as, a hard-core hippy on bushland property on the south-east coast of Australia. Inspired by her natural surroundings, Katherine began to paint small gouache studies of native flora and forest floors before meeting a local abstract artist who quickly became her mentor. Seeking to distil classic interpretations of the beauty of the natural world in an organic, abstract space, Katherine incorporates non-traditional media and processes in her work. During artist residencies in Italy, France, Egypt and upstate New York, she sourced raw materials from the local environment with which to make art. When a fatal fire sparked the end of her nearly three-decade-long marriage in 2002, Katherine decided to make art fire itself, subjecting her large timber panels to the transformative power of the flame with a blow torch and pyrography equipment. Following the 2019/20 Australian bushfires, she was selected as one of ten artists to participate in OUTPUT: Art After Fire, an international pilot project supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through their Cultural Diplomacy Program. The project assisted artists in south east Australia and the American west to create artwork about their bushfire experiences. During the project, Katherine explored themes of destruction, ephemerality and change and land/culture dichotomies and is now compelled to make art which she hopes will raise awareness about climate change and the ecological perils facing the planet. Katherine’s work has been exhibited across Australia and overseas and she has been the recipient of several scholarships, grants and art prizes, including the Heysen Art Prize for Interpretation of Place in 2009. Her memoir, Hippy Days, Arabian Nights, was published by Melbourne publisher, Wild Dingo Press in 2017 and she holds a Graduate Diploma in Therapeutic Art Practice. Since the bushfires, Katherine has run a number of writing-related workshops for fire-affected communities in her region.
