Statement about the works
The two pieces selected below although very different in composition show ’ preoccupation and fascination with the world around him has spanned his long artistic career.
‘A Winter City Morning’ shows the landscapes of Matthew’s mind – an urban setting – landmarks and familiar city objects jump out of this abstract scene. New York is the inspiration for this piece, yet through Matthews’ lens it is a purified stark white NY city, like the city sitting in crisp white snow – it is pictured here idyllically with a dreamy essence.

In the second piece – ‘Her Earth World’, Matthews’ Utopia series can be appreciated here in full force. A frequent visitor to St Barth, the rugged island landscape and its flora and fauna also dominate Matthews’ dreams and imagination. In this body of work, Matthews pays homage to the spirit of the island and the creative debt that he owes it. Matthews’s singularly meditative and enticing representations of the island’s landscapes, flora and fauna celebrate St Barth as both subject and muse. For an artist whose body of work represents a longing to escape the chaos of modernity, the unmatched beauty and quiet seclusion of the small island embodies the promise of utopia.
The light, energy and the island’s vibrant vegetation has become a mecca for the artist – calling him back year after year. Informing his work and entering into his imagination, the islands rolling hills and folding roads have made a map in his mind of his memories and experiences. Familiar territory and imagery are celebrated on his canvases in his signature pure white style. “Somewhere there’s an inner feeling of serenity and peace among all living things.. From humans to insects to mammals to earth.. The connection is there all around us.” (VM)
